Concern Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are when veins form a noticeable bulge under the skin. They are mainly found on the legs, especially in women. Varicose veins indicate a problem with venous circulation and are often associated with a feeling of heavy legs. They are caused by the loss of elasticity in the venous walls and the enlargement of veins due to aging or damage to the venous valves, the small flaps located in the veins of the legs that prevent blood from flowing downward.

Different Types of Varicose Veins

Saphenous Varicose Veins

Visible varicose veins are most often linked to the poor functioning of the main veins in the legs, called the great saphenous vein and the small saphenous vein. These are usually invisible because they are located up to 2 cm deep under the skin. The great saphenous vein begins at the ankle and runs up the inside of the leg to the groin. The small saphenous vein, which is shorter, starts near the heel and ends at the back of the knee; sometimes it extends higher up the thigh.

Other Accessory or Tributary Varicose Veins

Other varicose veins may branch from a saphenous vein or be independent. Their size varies, and they can be very large. Sometimes they expand over a short segment, in which case they are referred to as ampullary dilation or ectasia. These dilations have a higher risk of leading to paraphlebitis (superficial venous thrombosis) or accidental rupture.

Telangiectasias or Spider Veins

These are dilations of very fine vessels just under the skin. These dilations affect venules (very small veins), but also capillaries and arterioles (very small arteries). They can also be located on the face. Spider veins and telangiectasias do not contribute much to pain but are mainly considered unsightly.

How Can We Prevent Varicose Veins?

It is not possible to fully prevent the appearance of varicose veins, especially when genetics are involved. However, it is possible to slow their progression with some relatively simple measures:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Lead an active lifestyle
  • Consume foods rich in fiber and low in sodium

Additionally, you can minimize the discomfort of existing varicose veins in several ways:

  • Elevate your legs several times a day, and sleep with them slightly raised (e.g., placing a pillow under the mattress)
  • If you must remain in the same position for a long time, remember to stretch frequently
  • Avoid hot places: spas, saunas, tanning salons, hot wax hair removal, prolonged sunbathing, etc.
  • Apply cold water to your legs
  • Avoid high-heeled shoes
