Concern Cellulite

What is cellulite?

Cellulite, also known as "orange peel," is a very common condition, especially among women, but what is it? It appears in 80% of women over 20, and although men can have it too, 95% of cellulite cases are in women. It often appears at puberty, usually on the back of the thighs, the abdomen, upper arms, and buttocks. Furthermore, despite what we often hear, cellulite is not necessarily linked to overweight. Some women with a higher weight do not have it, while leaner or athletic women may. The subcutaneous layer contains fat cells - adipocytes. The fibers that connect the skin to the deep tissues form cells that contain fat accumulations. When the fat cells increase in size, these "compartments" form bulges on the surface of the skin. That’s when the “orange peel” effect occurs. Cellulite is a combination of fat deposits, fluids, and "waste" distributed unevenly in the layers beneath the skin. Considered a normal physiological phenomenon, cellulite has no health consequences.

What can cause cellulite?

There are several types of cellulite, so many factors contribute. Most often, this condition is caused by genetics, hence a predisposition, and hormonal variations.

We must also consider the morphological differences between women and men. Due to the difference in subcutaneous tissue, generally, a woman's skin is thinner than a man's, making everything that happens beneath the skin more visible, and women tend to have a higher percentage of body fat than men, leaving more room for skin irregularities.

Finally, poor blood circulation, slow lymphatic circulation, fluid retention, accumulation of toxins, excess weight, poor diet, lack of physical activity, stress, smoking, and alcohol are other factors influencing the formation of cellulite.

How can we prevent cellulite?

As mentioned earlier, it’s not always possible to prevent cellulite, as some factors are beyond our control, but it can be minimized. To start, healthy lifestyle habits influence the intensity of the "orange peel" effect. It is therefore important to maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, limit foods high in salt, drink plenty of water, consume alcohol in moderation, and not smoke. It’s also important to promote good blood and lymphatic circulation by avoiding tight clothing, high heels, varying your posture, not staying in the same position for too long whether sitting or standing, avoiding heat, and more.
