Concern Rosacea
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a circulatory skin disorder, meaning it is related to the blood circulation of the skin and causes redness. This condition typically affects the face, primarily the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, but it can also spread down to the neck and affect the eyes. This "disease" of the skin can start affecting predisposed adults as early as age 20, with a peak frequency between 30 and 50 years old.
What Are the Types of Rosacea?
Rosacea manifests as redness and pimples on the face. Normally, this chronic condition evolves in several stages, but depending on the individual, it may not necessarily go through all the stages.
Erythematotelangiectatic (or Vascular)
- occasional and temporary redness on the face
- swelling on the face
- telangiectasia (small visible vessels)
- burning sensation
- dry skin
Papulopustular
- persistent redness
- pimples
- telangiectasia (small visible vessels)
- burning sensation
Phymatous (or Sebaceous Hyperplasia)
- thickening of the skin
- pimples
- dilated pores
- rough skin
- permanent redness on the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead, and eyelids
Ocular
- affects 50% of people with rosacea
- tearing and/or dryness
- feeling of foreign bodies in the eye and burning sensation
- sensitivity to light and blurry vision
- visible vessels in the eyes
Granulomatous
- rare variant
- hard yellow, brown, and red pimples
- lesions on the eyelids
- not necessarily other signs of rosacea
How Can Rosacea Be Prevented?
Since people with rosacea are predisposed to it, it is not necessarily preventable. However, what can be done is symptom prevention, to prevent it from being too noticeable and to slow its progression. It is recommended to avoid factors that exacerbate it, anything that increases body temperature and irritates the skin, and to use products that strengthen the vascular walls and the skin, as well as protect them.
