Concern Telangiectasies
What are telangiectasies?
Telangiectasies are the result of blood circulation issues. When deep veins are not functioning properly, smaller vessels closer to the skin’s surface take over. They dilate and become more visible. Telangiectasies are permanent dilations of very small veins, ranging from 0.1 to 1 millimeter in diameter. They are located near the skin surface and appear red, blue, or purple in color. Most often found on the legs, they can also appear on other areas of the body, such as the face, nose, cheeks, chin, neck, or lower back. They are more common in women under 50, but by the age of 60, both men and women are equally affected by telangiectasies.
What can cause telangiectasies?
It may be due to fragility of small superficial vessels, or telangiectasies could be a symptom of superficial venous insufficiency and may be associated with varicose veins of varying severity.
Some very fine and clustered telangiectasies may appear after skin trauma or a therapeutic procedure on a vein (e.g., surgery).
Some factors that contribute to the appearance of telangiectasies:
- age
- heredity
- rapid weight fluctuations
- overweight
- hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause
- etc.
How can you prevent telangiectasies?
First, it's important to exercise to avoid circulation issues. Activities like cycling, walking, and swimming have beneficial effects on the blood network. Speaking of circulation stimulation, cold water works very well, while saunas, hot baths, and jacuzzis should be avoided. Additionally, it's important to frequently change positions, stretch, and move around. Wearing loose clothing is an effective way to prevent telangiectasies on the body. Lastly, using sunscreen is recommended to protect the delicate skin on the face and to help prevent the appearance of spider veins on the legs, calves, and ankles as we age.
