What are pigmentary stains?

Pigmentary stains are an abnormality that alters the skin color through melanocytes. These are cells located in the skin, responsible for its pigmentation (coloration) through the secretion of melanin. A pigmentary stain is a change in the normal color of the skin. A stain can be hyperpigmented (brown) or hypopigmented (white). As most of the time in cosmetology, when we refer to pigmentary stains, we are talking about hyperpigmentation, which is what we will discuss here.

What can cause pigmentary stains?

Solar Lentigo

These are round light brown spots that appear after repeated sun exposure with age. They are also called sun spots or age spots. They are present on the areas of the skin most exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, and décolletage.

Chloasma

Pigmentary stains caused by hormonal changes. These spots are due to an excess of melanin production associated with hormonal imbalances. Chloasma is most commonly located on the cheeks, forehead, and above the lips.

Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

This occurs when the body produces more melanin after an injury, as part of a natural defense mechanism. Sun exposure during healing leads to pigmentation. Pigmented scars may also appear after acne or insect bites. These are stains that persist after the disappearance of the pimple if it wasn't properly treated.

How can we prevent pigmentary stains?

The way to prevent pigmentary stains is to protect yourself from UV rays. Prolonged and frequent sun exposure should be avoided. We should also protect our skin from the sun as much as possible! Using sunscreen, a sun filter, or a daily sunblock is essential to fight the appearance of pigmentary stains.
