Acne
What is Acne, and What Can Cause It?
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face, neck, back, chest, shoulders, and sometimes even the upper arms. The sebaceous glands play the primary role in this condition. Sebaceous glands are tiny glands located in the follicle of each hair, and they produce sebum, a type of “oil” that lubricates the hair as it grows.
There Are Several Types of Acne
Juvenile Acne
This is the most common type, affecting about 90% of teenagers. It typically lasts for three to five years, starting between the ages of thirteen and twenty-five, and then gradually fades.
Comedonal Acne
Characterized by a high presence of blackheads and milium grains.
Papulopustular Acne
In addition to blackheads and milium grains, this type also involves papules and pustules, meaning red pimples and pimples with pus.
Nodulocystic Acne
Along with all the characteristics of papulopustular acne, this also includes large, deep, and painful inflammatory nodules.
Occupational Acne
This type is related to the profession and can be caused by exposure to certain substances, constant sitting, or lack of hygiene.
Medication-Induced Acne
Triggered by the use of certain medications or their application on the skin.
Cosmetic Acne
Caused by the application of cosmetic products on the skin. Often associated with asphyxiated skin and numerous blackheads.
Rosacea Acne
People with rosacea experience redness in the face, often accompanied by papules and pustules.
How Can We Prevent Acne?
Preventing acne isn't always possible, as it's a condition that can be genetically determined or caused by oily skin type. However, it can be managed.
Here are some aspects to consider:
- Clean the skin gently 1 to 2 times a day, especially the affected areas, with a mild, unscented soap or cleanser.
- Protect yourself from the sun, as UV rays can worsen acne.
- Do not touch, scratch, pinch, or pop blackheads, papules, and pustules. Let them dry and heal on their own.
- Take a shower after intense physical activity, as the sweat-sebum mix can trap bacteria in the skin's pores.
- Wash greasy hair regularly.
- Wear loose clothing to avoid friction and sweat irritating the skin.
- Avoid thick foundations and oil-based cosmetics.
- Remove makeup before bed.
- Throw away expired beauty products.
- Clean cosmetic applicators regularly.
- Shave only when necessary.
- Use a razor that irritates the skin the least.
- Change razor blades frequently to avoid bacteria.
- Avoid aftershave lotions that contain alcohol.
- Maintain good nutrition.
- Ensure a good sleep cycle.
- Be cautious of what comes into prolonged contact with the skin.
- Avoid exposing the skin to pollutants.
